The engineering force of the Military Command in Quang Binh Province, north-central Vietnam swiftly removed a wartime bomb, weighing over 200 kilograms, found at the edge of a street in downtown Dong Hoi City on Friday.
The bomb, weighing 227 kilograms, measuring over 1.5 meters in length and containing 87 kilograms of explosive, was safely transferred to a military warehouse the same morning through a collaborative effort between the engineering force and Mines Advisory Group (MAG), a humanitarian non-government organization that helps clear explosive remnants of war.
The military engineers identified it as an MK 82 bomb, which still has the detonator, dropped by the U.S. during the American war in Vietnam.
“The bomb has been safely brought to the warehouse,” said a leader of the engineering team of the Quang Binh Military Command.
“Shortly, it will be detonated along with other explosive materials.”
Earlier, a construction team involved in building an embankment along the Nhat Le estuary in Hai Thanh Ward, Dong Hoi City, uncovered the bomb during excavation.
It was buried several meters deep and only 10 meters from Truong Phap Street in downtown Dong Hoi City.
