According to the Thuong Ninh Commune People’s Committee, the bomb was found on July 31 by the family of Nguyen Bach Thao while they were clearing a landslide site near their home following storm Wipha, the third to hit Vietnam this year.
Wipha made landfall in northern Vietnam on July 22, causing widespread rainfall, flooding, and property damage across many northern and north-central provinces.
The bomb, measuring 120cm in length and 40cm in diameter, was partially exposed, with two-thirds of its body lying above ground on the family’s property.

Upon receiving the report at 7:30 pm on July 31, the commune’s military command immediately secured the scene, cordoned off the area, and alerted the regional defense command in Tinh Gia for further action.
On Friday, military sappers and relevant forces transported the bomb to a military-run firing range in Nhu Xuan, where it was safely detonated.
Local authorities confirmed the operation was completed without any incident.
