Unleashing Tay Ninh’s growth potential along the Vam rivers

At the announcement ceremony on June 30 marking the administrative merger of old Long An and Tay Ninh Provinces into a new Tay Ninh Province, Nguyen Van Quyet, secretary of the Tay Ninh Provincial Party Committee, outlined the strengths and vision of the newly-expanded province.

“With this merger, Tay Ninh now presents a new administrative, organizational, and structural identity, combining the advantages of timing, geography, and unity,” Quyet said.

“This gives rise to major expectations for the future.”

The new Tay Ninh is poised to become a key growth driver in the southern key economic region—a standout hub for clean industry, high-tech agriculture, trade, and tourism.

Ba Den Mountain, Tay Ninh’s top tourist destination, is undergoing development for spiritual tourism and eco-resort projects.

It also serves as a vital international trade gateway for both the southeast region and the country as a whole.

At the same time, Tay Ninh aims to preserve and promote the unique cultural heritage of the Vam Co Dong and Vam Co Tay river basins.

With the old Long An’s expansive rice fields in the Dong Thap Muoi wetlands and former Tay Ninh’s iconic Ba Den Mountain—the highest peak in southern Vietnam—the province is rich in both natural and cultural assets.

The new Tay Ninh is deepening its integration into regional and global markets.

Strategically located along more than 370km of the border with Cambodia and offering river access to the sea, the province belongs to both the southeast region and the Mekong Delta, while also bordering Ho Chi Minh City.

Backed by an increasingly modern and interconnected transportation system, well-developed socioeconomic infrastructure, and efficient international ports and border crossings, Tay Ninh is well-positioned to attract a new wave of promising investment across key sectors.

The province now has a real opportunity to grow stronger, wealthier, and more competitive—solidifying its leadership in the Mekong Delta and striving to become one of the more developed localities in the southern key economic region.

According to the National Statistics Office of Vietnam, Tay Ninh recorded a gross regional domestic product (GRDP) growth rate of 9.63 percent in the first half of 2025.

Agriculture, forestry, and fisheries grew by 4.55 percent, industry and construction by 12.67 percent, and trade and services by 8.25 percent.

This puts Tay Ninh at the top of the southern provinces and seventh among 34 provinces and cities nationwide—a testament to the legacy of both former provinces.

In the same period, the old Long An’s GRDP grew by 9.49 percent, while the old Tay Ninh expanded by 9.84 percent.

Long An stood out for its impressive fiscal performance, collecting over VND20.633 trillion (US$787 million) by June 30—85.78 percent of the target set by the central government and a 42.57-percent increase compared to the same period last year.

Meanwhile, the former Tay Ninh was home to the vital Moc Bai International Border Gate—Vietnam’s most important gateway to Cambodia—contributing significantly to trade.

In January–June, its exports reached $3.39 billion, up 5.3 percent, and imports $3.47 billion, up 16.9 percent.

Tourism in the old Tay Ninh also shows strong momentum.

In the first half of 2025, the province welcomed approximately 3.5 million visitors, up 3.5 percent.

Tourism revenue topped VND2.704 trillion ($103.15 million), a 29-percent increase year over year.

Building on these accomplishments, the newly-merged Tay Ninh immediately began restructuring its provincial administration to ensure it is streamlined, strong, efficient, and effective.

Vietnam's two-tiered local government system, including provinces/cities and wards/communes, is already functioning smoothly and coherently in Tay Ninh.

For the second half of 2025, chairman of the Tay Ninh People’s Committee Nguyen Van Ut announced that the province will continue to push forward with industrialization and modernization, driven by science, innovation, and digital transformation.

Efforts will also focus on completing institutional reforms, mobilizing all resources to develop modern and integrated transportation infrastructure, and building a high-quality workforce to meet the province’s development needs.

Long An Ward, located at the confluence of the Vam Co Tay and Bao Dinh Rivers, is being developed into Tay Ninh’s modern and dynamic administrative, economic, and service center.

Economic development will be integrated with cultural preservation, social equity, welfare, environmental protection, and overall quality of life improvement.

Specific targets for 2025 include a GRDP growth rate of 9–9.5 percent, with ambitions to exceed 10 percent.

Per capita GRDP is expected to reach VND115–120 million ($4,386–4,577).

The province aims to increase local budget revenue by 20–30 percent compared to 2024.

In agriculture, forestry, and fisheries, priority is being given to the continued implementation of the 'Sustainable Development of One Million Hectares of High-Quality, Low-Emission Rice Linked to Green Growth in the Mekong Delta by 2030' project.

There is also a focus on monitoring and managing planting area codes and packing facility codes.

Livestock farming is being directed toward biosecurity and environmental protection, with efforts to build branding and marketing schemes for agricultural products.

Plans are also underway to monitor aquaculture environments, boost forest cover, and expand tree planting.

The local authorities continue to disseminate scientific knowledge, promote best practices, and guide farmers in effective crop and livestock restructuring.
