Vietnam Airlines limits check-in counters to passengers with checked baggage, special cases

National carrier Vietnam Airlines has announced that from December 1, its check-in counters will serve only passengers on domestic flights who have checked baggage or belong to special categories, such as unaccompanied minors, the elderly, and those requiring assistance.

All other passengers must complete the entire process, including ticket purchase, check-in, security screening, and boarding, using biometric technology linked to VNeID digital identification and authentication or via self-service kiosks at airports nationwide.

The new regulation stems from Prime Ministerial Directive No. 24, issued on September 13, 2025, which focuses on implementing technology-based solutions for citizens and businesses using population data and digital identification.

Vietnam Airlines recommends that travelers verify their level-2 VNeID accounts to access all features and avoid errors during check-in.

Under the new process, passengers log into the VNeID app with a level-2 verified account, select “Other Services,” and continue with “Online Check-in.”

After agreeing to share their data, they are redirected to the Vietnam Airlines app to complete check-in and eKYC (electronic Know Your Customer).

At the airport, passengers undergo biometric checks at security and boarding gates. Those who have checked in but not completed eKYC will be prompted to do so immediately via VNeID.

Vietnam Airlines and other carriers say the new procedure shortens processing times, reduces waiting periods, and improves accuracy through biometric verification.

Passengers also no longer need to worry about forgetting physical ID documents, a common cause of missed flights in the past.

The airline acknowledged that the system may pose challenges for those unfamiliar with VNeID, who could encounter issues such as forgotten passwords, slow performance, or network disruptions.

Passengers are therefore advised to install and verify their accounts in advance and test online check-in to ensure the app works properly.

During the initial phase, travelers are still advised to carry a citizen ID card or passport in case additional verification is required.

Support staff will be available at airports during the early roll-out.

Overall, the new process is expected to deliver a faster and more modern travel experience, but passengers are encouraged to prepare ahead of time to avoid minor issues that could affect their plans, the carrier advised.
