All eight are in a stable physical and mental condition, Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Thanh Hai, head of the Khanh Hoi Border Guard Station under the Ca Mau Border Guard Command, said on Monday.
At around 2:00 pm on Sunday, Dang Van Phil, a fisherman from Tran Van Thoi District and captain of fishing boat CM-91753, spotted eight foreign nationals on a raft adrift at sea, signaling for help.
Phil reported the incident to the boat owner, Phan Tan Sin of U Minh District, who then went directly to the border guard station to report the situation.
The station immediately contacted Phil and requested his assistance in rescuing the individuals and bringing them ashore for transfer to border authorities.
Upon receiving the group of foreigners, the station provided them with food, beverages, and medical care, while carrying out legal procedures in accordance with Vietnamese law.
Preliminary identification by border guards revealed that among the eight foreign nationals, seven are Thai and one is Cambodian.
According to the group, they had been part of a nine-person crew—seven men and two women—on a food supply boat.
During their trip, the vessel encountered an incident and capsized at sea, leaving one man missing.
The remaining eight managed to survive using a makeshift raft, which eventually drifted into Vietnamese waters.
