Vietnam clubs lose AFC Champion League slots

No Vietnamese football clubs have met the requirements to be able to play at the 2013 AFC Champion League, the Asian Football Confederation has announced.

The AFC Champions League is the premier Asian club football competition hosted annually by AFC, including the top 32 clubs from the top 10 Asian leagues.

A club must pass the A Standard to be invited to play in the tournament, the AFC said at a meeting of the Pro League Committee held in Malaysia, newswire VnExpress reported.

An AFC delegation arrived in Vietnam in October to evaluate the country’s club facilities and other standards to determine their rankings.

The evaluation was conducted in five standards: sporting venues, training system, competition organization, marketing and public relations, and financial and legal status.

Becamex Binh Duong is the only club that met the standards to attend the 2013 AFC Champions League, but its poor result in the 2012 V-League has kept the club away from the tournament.

Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country to have representatives at the AFC event next year, with Muangthong United and Buriram United meeting all requirements for participation.
