The handbook, produced by the Vietnam Food Bank Network in collaboration with the Danish Embassy and the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, provides practical guidance for households, schools, businesses, and communities to sort, reuse, and recycle food safely and efficiently.

The launch event in Ho Chi Minh City highlighted efforts to advance a circular economy in Vietnam, curb food waste, and support the country’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and other Sustainable Development Goals.

The initiative falls under the Vietnam-Denmark Green Strategic Partnership signed in November 2023.

In June 2024, both countries announced a joint action plan for 2024-25 to support Vietnam’s transition to a low-carbon, circular economy.

Sanne Høj Andrén, food and agriculture counsellor at the Danish Embassy in Vietnam, said the project is meant to transfer knowledge and best practices in food waste management, generating positive community-level change.

Nguyen Tuan Khoi, founder of the Vietnam Food Bank Network, said the handbook is designed as a practical guide to inspire citizens to become ‘Green Heroes’ by taking small steps such as sorting waste at the source, conserving food, and recycling leftovers.

According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, roughly one-third of the world’s food—around 1.3 billion tonnes annually—is lost or wasted.

Vietnam faces rising food waste in urban areas and industrial zones, putting pressure on the environment and waste management systems.

The handbook adapts Denmark’s international standards in waste management and green economy practices to local conditions in Vietnam.
