Vietnam, Denmark renew partnership on data-driven healthcare, sustainable health insurance

The Vietnam Social Security and the Embassy of Denmark in Vietnam on Monday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the 2026-28 period, cementing their commitment to strengthening cooperation in sustainable health insurance and advancing more data-informed healthcare in Vietnam.

The MoU marks the fifth phase of their partnership, which began in 2018, and is intended to help Vietnam strengthen health economics, improve the use of health data, and ensure the long-term sustainability of its health insurance system as non-communicable diseases become increasingly prevalent.

Under the renewed partnership, both sides will expand cooperation through policy dialogue, professional exchanges, capacity building, digital health initiatives, and health economics.

The collaboration will also place greater emphasis on analyzing disease burdens through health data, conducting long-term health-economic assessments, and exploring value-based payment models to improve healthcare efficiency, sustainability, and patient outcomes.

“Health insurance and universal health coverage remain shared priorities for both Denmark and Vietnam,” said Lasse Pedersen Hjortshøj, counsellor at the Embassy of Denmark in Vietnam.

“Ensuring sustainable healthcare financing and equitable access to quality care require continuous innovation, strong partnerships, and evidence-based policymaking.

“Through this new phase of our cooperation, we are pleased to share Denmark's experience with Vietnam and work together to transform data into better policy, more effective use of healthcare resources, and ultimately better outcomes for patients.”

He added that the partnership also strengthens cooperation among public institutions and responsible private-sector partners by promoting professional capacity building, knowledge sharing, and institutional collaboration.

Since its launch, the partnership has supported nationwide training programs, policy dialogues, technical exchanges, and study visits to strengthen Vietnam's health insurance system.

More than 1,900 health insurance assessment officers nationwide have received training on non-communicable diseases management.

The new phase will continue supporting professional training and policy dialogue while expanding cooperation in health economics, digital health, sustainable healthcare financing, and evidence-based policymaking.

The partnership continues to benefit from Denmark-based healthcare company Novo Nordisk's technical expertise in addressing non-communicable diseases.

Drawing on Denmark's experience in metabolic health, the company supports knowledge exchange and the sharing of international best practices, while promoting stronger prevention, earlier intervention, and broader access to quality care.

Sule Erdim Ersoy, general manager of Novo Nordisk Vietnam, said the company remains committed to supporting Vietnam's healthcare system through scientific dialogue, policy exchange, professional training, and data-driven approaches to improve disease management, healthcare financing, and long-term system sustainability.

By combining Denmark's expertise in digital health, health data, and non-communicable disease management with Vietnam's healthcare reforms, the renewed partnership seeks to provide policymakers with stronger evidence for decision-making while improving patient outcomes and ensuring a more accessible and sustainable health insurance system.
