Vietnam dominated much of the game but repeatedly failed to convert their chances, hitting the woodwork three times in the first half and wasting further opportunities after the break.
Their misses proved costly in the 78th minute, when Almatar Omar headed Kuwait in front from a free kick.
Vietnam responded almost immediately. Two minutes later, Le Van Thuan delivered a corner for Ngoc My to head in the equalizer.
Vietnam U23 pushed hard for a late winner, but their efforts were again denied by the woodwork. In the sixth minute of stoppage time, Van Thuan broke clear and fired a powerful effort that crashed against the crossbar.
The match ended 1-1 despite Vietnam registering 27 shots.

The result leaves Vietnam and Kuwait on one point each, behind Uzbekistan, who top Group C with three points and a goal difference of plus four.
The Philippines sit bottom after losing their opening match.
With only the top two teams in each group advancing to the quarterfinals, Vietnam now face greater pressure in their remaining fixtures.
Their next match against the Philippines on September 18 has become particularly important, as dropping more points could leave Vietnam needing a result against group leaders Uzbekistan in their final match on September 22.
Vietnam’s hopes of reaching the knockout stage remain alive, but their finishing will need to improve if they are to turn possession and chances into the points they need.
