The result at Thien Truong Stadium also stretched Vietnam's unbeaten run to 17 matches under coach Kim Sang Sik, a sequence that includes 13 consecutive wins since December 21, 2024.
Center-back Do Duy Manh opened the scoring before forward Nguyen Xuan Son struck twice with headers, while Malaysia pulled one back in the 77th minute.
Vietnam's last non-win was a 1-1 draw against the Philippines on December 18, 2024 in the ASEAN Cup group stage.
Since then, Vietnam beat Myanmar 5-0 and went on to defeat Singapore in the semifinals and Thailand in the final over two legs to win the 2024 ASEAN Cup.
The team maintained momentum through 2025 with victories over Cambodia in a friendly and wins against Laos and Nepal in two matches each.
A 0-4 defeat to Malaysia in 2025 was later annulled after Malaysia were found to have fielded seven ineligible naturalized players and sanctioned with a reversed 3-0 result by the Asian Football Confederation.
Vietnam opened 2026 with a 3-0 win over Bangladesh in a friendly on March 26 before Tuesday's victory extended the streak.
The 13-match winning run is the longest in Vietnam's history, surpassing a previous best of six set in 2022 under former coach Park Hang Seo.
It also exceeds previous Southeast Asian records of nine consecutive wins held by Indonesia between 1968 and 1969, Thailand from 1995 to 1996, and Singapore during 2004-2005.
Additionally, the victory over Malaysia earned Vietnam 9.67 points, lifting them to 98th in the FIFA's world rankings with 1,225.67 points.
