A car drives in the wrong direction in the lane next to the central divider on the Hanoi–Bac Giang Expressway in northern Vietnam, February 17, 2026, in this handout image released by Vietnam’s Traffic Police Department.

The driver, identified as V.T.T.L., 24, from Van Don in Quang Ninh Province, admitted driving a car against traffic on the expressway at about 1:19 pm on February 17, police said.

Her vehicle was traveling in the lane closest to the central divider, where the maximum permitted speed is 90 km per hour.

Drivers traveling in the correct direction at high speed had to brake and steer away to avoid hitting the car.

Traffic police in Bac Ninh Province issued a citation against the driver, including a fine of VND35 million (US$1,333) and a deduction of 10 points from her 12-point driver’s license.

Police said driving in the wrong direction on expressways is extremely dangerous and carries a high risk of serious accidents.

The Hanoi–Bac Giang Expressway runs about 46 km and links Hanoi with northern provinces and border crossings in Lang Son Province.
