In a document sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs on Tuesday, the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour said it supported a holiday schedule running from February 4 to February 10, 2027.

The break would last seven consecutive days, including the five statutory Tet holidays and two compensatory days off for weekend overlap.

According to the VGCL, the arrangement complies with existing regulations while giving workers more time to travel home, celebrate Tet with their families, and recover before returning to work.

The federation added that the schedule would help ensure stable production and business activities after the holiday.

Several ministries, including the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism and the Ministry of Construction, have also expressed support for the seven-day option.

For the 2027 National Day holiday, government agencies have agreed on a four-day break from September 2 to September 5, including an additional day off on September 3 and the weekend.

Regarding Vietnam Culture Day on November 24, 2026, the labor federation and ministries support swapping the working day on November 23 with Saturday, November 28, creating a four-day holiday.

The labor federation has also urged the Ministry of Home Affairs to announce the holiday schedule for Reunification Day (April 30) and International Workers' Day (May 1) in 2027.

It proposed a four-day break from April 30 to May 3, as May 1 falls on a Saturday and would be compensated with a day off on the following working day.

The VGCL said announcing holiday schedules and compensatory days off early would help businesses plan employee leave in line with the schedules for civil servants and public employees, while also allowing them to better organize production and business activities.

Under Vietnam's 2019 Labor Code, employees are entitled to 11 days of paid public holidays each year, including one day for New Year's Day, five days for Tet, one day for the Hung Kings Commemoration Day (10th day of the 3rd lunar month), one day for Reunification Day, one day for International Workers' Day, and two days for National Day (September 2).

Foreign employees working in Vietnam are entitled to an additional day off for their traditional New Year and another for their country's National Day.

Earlier, the National Assembly passed a resolution on the development of Vietnamese culture, which took effect on July 1. Notably, the resolution designates November 24 each year as Vietnam Culture Day, with employees entitled to a paid day off.

Lunar New Year, known locally as Tet Nguyen Dan or simply Tet, is Vietnam's most important traditional holiday. It marks the beginning of the lunar calendar year and is typically celebrated with family reunions, ancestral worship, and festive activities.

The holiday period is also one of the country's busiest travel seasons, with millions of people returning to their hometowns, driving up demand for air, rail, and road transport in the weeks leading up to Tet.

The 2027 Lunar New Year begins on February 6, marking the start of the Year of the Goat in the lunar calendar.
