Vietnam lost 2-3 to Pakistan at group II of Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Zone and will stage a play-off in the relegation battle with Sri Lanka in April.

Yesterday in Da Lat, Vietnam had one loss and one win in two men’s singles matches against Pakistan, failing to reconcile its 2-1 loss to Pakistan on the previous day.

In the first match, Hoang Thien lost 2/6 4/6 2/6 to Aqeel Khan. In the last formal match, Vietnamese Trinh Linh Giang beat Yasir Khan 7/6 6/2.

Earlier on Saturday, Vietnamese duo Le Quoc Khanh / Ngo Quang Huy were beaten 3-1 by Pakistani team Qureshi Aisam / Aqeel Khan. In the two men’s singles matches, Vietnam and Pakistan tied 1-1 after Ngo Quang Huy of Vietnam lost 0/6 4/6 3/6 to Pakistani Aqeel Khan and Hoang Thien beat Muhammad Abid 6/3 6/2 6/0.

With the results, Vietnam is scheduled to play Sri Lanka on April 4-6 to battle to compete in group II next year. The loser will have to play in group III.

Sri Lanka‘s iconic player Harshana Godamanna beat both Aqeel Khan and Aisam Qureshi of Pakistan last year.

Ahead of the Davis Cup competition, Vietnamese youth tennis star Ly Hoang Nam dropped out of the national team to train in Thailand when the team was preparing to take on Pakistan amid disputes between local sports authorities and his club.
