Vietnam Lunar New Year traffic accidents fall 29%, deaths down 23%

Traffic accidents across Vietnam during the nine-day 2026 Lunar New Year holiday from February 14 to Sunday fell sharply from a year earlier, with 381 crashes nationwide killing 230 people and injuring 274, the Traffic Police Department said.

The figures marked a decline of 154 accidents, or 28.79 percent, 73 fewer deaths, or 23.2 percent, and 118 fewer injuries, or 30.10 percent, compared with the same holiday period in 2025.

Road accidents accounted for 378 cases, leaving 224 people dead and 274 injured, down 152 accidents, 76 deaths, and 117 injuries from a year earlier.

One railway accident killed one person, down two cases and one death from the previous year.

Inland waterways recorded two accidents that left five people dead and five missing, up four deaths and five missing compared with the same period last year.

During the holiday, traffic police handled 76,374 violations, revoked 2,473 driver’s licences, deducted points in 16,095 cases, and impounded more than 28,000 vehicles.

Alcohol-related offenses accounted for 26,337 cases, or 34.4 percent of total violations, up 9,188 cases, or 53.5 percent, from a year earlier.

Seven cases of assault against officers on duty were reported in Thai Nguyen Province, Hanoi, Hai Phong, Khanh Hoa Province, and Tuyen Quang Province, injuring two police officers. Authorities detained seven suspects for investigation.

Traffic volumes on expressways rose from a year earlier, with more than 5.2 million vehicle entries from local roads and more than 5.3 million exits, increases of 749,598 and 777,433 respectively.

On average, 585,009 vehicles entered expressways daily, up 16.6 percent, while 597,634 exited, up 16.9 percent, with sharp increases recorded on the Noi Bai-Lao Cai, Phap Van-Cao Bo-Mai Son-National Highway 45-Nghi Son, and Nghi Son-Dien Chau-Bai Vot-Ham Nghi-Bung-Vung Ang-Cam Lo routes, the department said.
