According to FIFA's announcement, Vietnam's futsal team made a significant leap from 31st to 26th in the world rankings, earning 1,171.02 points.
Notably, Vietnam gained 27.81 points— the fourth-highest increase globally— trailing only Sweden (ranked 74th; +34.12 points), Germany (47th; +31.69 points), and Moldova (66th; +30.27 points).
This impressive gain is attributed to a successful series of friendly matches held in Ho Chi Minh City in April.
Vietnam defeated Kazakhstan 4-1 and drew 2-2 in the rematch. They also beat Saudi Arabia in two matches with scores of 2-1 and 3-2.
In Southeast Asia, Thailand remains the top-ranked team at 11th in the world, followed by Indonesia in 23rd place.
However, the point gap between Indonesia and Vietnam has narrowed to just 18.44.
With strong performances in upcoming matches, Vietnam could surpass Indonesia in the next FIFA update on December 12, 2025.
Currently, the Vietnamese futsal squad of 20 players is training at the Thai Son Nam arena and will head to Kuwait for a training camp from September 9 to 14.
After the camp, head coach Diego Giustozzi and his team will travel to China for the 2026 AFC Futsal Asian Cup qualifiers.
In the draw, Vietnam was placed in Group E, where they will face Hong Kong on September 20, China on September 22, and Lebanon on September 24.
In the women’s FIFA futsal rankings, Vietnam remains 11th in the world and second in Southeast Asia, behind only Thailand, who are ranked fourth globally.
The 2026 AFC Futsal Asian Cup qualifiers will feature 31 teams divided into eight groups—seven groups of four teams and one group of three.
Matches will be played in a round-robin format at centralized venues. The eight group winners and the seven best second-placed teams will qualify for the final tournament, joining host nation Indonesia.
