These separate meetings took place on May 21 during Minister Dien's working visit to the U.S., coinciding with the second round of trade negotiations on tariffs held from May 19 to 22.
The discussions occurred against the backdrop of a proposed 46-percent reciprocal tariff on Vietnamese imports announced by the U.S. on April 3.
Although initially set to take effect on April 9, the implementation was delayed by 90 days to allow time for further negotiations.
During the meetings, Minister Dien emphasized Vietnam's commitment to fostering harmonious and sustainable economic and trade cooperation that delivers tangible benefits to both nations' citizens and businesses.
He affirmed Vietnam's readiness to closely coordinate with the United States toward a trade agreement grounded in mutual respect for sovereignty, balanced interests, adherence to international commitments, and consideration of each country's development level.
Minister Dien also highlighted Vietnam's efforts to facilitate effective investment and business operations for American enterprises.
He proposed that the U.S. consider Vietnam a priority trade partner, especially given the elevation of their bilateral relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership in September 2023.
Senator Daines appreciated Minister Dien's suggestions and stated that he would communicate Vietnam's messages to the Trump administration promptly. He also expressed hope for significant advancements in reciprocal trade negotiations in the near future.
In his meeting with Senator Cruz, chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Minister Dien advocated for a fair and prompt resolution of pending tariff issues within the Trump administration and encouraged the establishment of a balanced and sustainable trade partnership between the two countries.
Senator Cruz praised Vietnam's recent initiatives aimed at enhancing cooperation, committed to supporting Vietnam in its reciprocal tariff negotiations with the United States, and expressed optimism for favorable outcomes.
Both senators acknowledged the development potential of the Vietnamese market, particularly in the sectors of industry, energy, high technology, and the digital economy.
They noted that numerous major American enterprises are closely monitoring Vietnam's policies and investment environment, expressing a desire to expand their business activities and invest long-term in this strategic Asia-Pacific market.
Minister Dien and both American officials expressed expectations that the comprehensive cooperation relationship between Vietnam and the U.S. would continue to strengthen and develop, especially as the global economy undergoes significant supply chain restructuring and seeks expansion into dynamic markets like Vietnam.
