Vietnam para team beats gold target, finishes 5th at ASEAN Para Games

Vietnam’s para sports team exceeded its gold medal target at the 13th ASEAN Para Games, finishing fifth overall after winning 38 gold medals at the regional multi-sport event that concluded on Monday.

Vietnam had set a pre-Games goal of securing between 30 and 35 gold medals and remaining among the top five nations, a target it surpassed by collecting a total of 144 medals, including 38 golds, 48 silvers, and 58 bronzes.

Chess was Vietnam’s most successful sport, contributing 15 gold medals, followed by swimming with 14 and athletics with seven.

Swimmer Vi Thi Hang was Vietnam’s standout athlete, winning four gold medals and setting two Para Games records during the competition.

Host nation Thailand topped the overall medal table with 175 gold medals, along with 155 silvers and 156 bronzes, with athletics accounting for 54 golds and swimming adding 49.

Indonesia finished second after winning 135 gold medals, with strong performances in athletics, swimming, and weightlifting.

Malaysia placed third with 64 gold medals, while the Philippines finished fourth with 45 golds.

The 13th ASEAN Para Games were held from January 20 to Monday in Thailand’s Nakhon Ratchasima Province, featuring 536 events in 19 sports.
