The visit will take place from October 9 to 11 at the invitation of Kim Jong Un, General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea and President of the State Affairs of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

“This trip is particularly meaningful as it marks the first visit of a General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam to North Korea in 18 years,” said Permanent Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Vu.

Vu said the timing, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties, highlights the importance both nations attach to their traditional friendship.

He described the trip as ‘an important milestone’ and a ‘historic trip,’ which is expected to produce new achievements and deepen cooperation in line with the wishes of both peoples.

He also emphasized that it reflects Vietnam’s consistent foreign policy of nurturing ties with traditional allies.

North Korea was one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with Vietnam in 1950.

That relationship was shaped by leaders like President Ho Chi Minh and President Kim Il Sung and has continued under later generations.

During Vietnam’s fight for independence, North Korea offered support and solidarity. In turn, Vietnam has supported North Korea through difficult times.

The visit is seen as an important chance for the top leaders to exchange views and set new strategic directions to strengthen this legacy.

It is expected to boost cooperation in healthcare, agriculture, culture, sports, and people to people exchanges, in accordance with international norms and the aspirations of both sides.

Vu also noted that Vietnam will continue to support peace, stability, and cooperation on the Korean Peninsula and globally, as part of its broader role in the international community.

As part of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations, 2025 has been designated as the Vietnam–North Korea Friendship Year.

Over the decades, the two countries have signed numerous agreements on healthcare, culture, civil aviation, judicial cooperation, investment promotion, and the avoidance of double taxation.

They have also maintained active cooperation through bilateral political consultations and intergovernmental committees focused on trade, science, and technology.

Cultural ties remain a strong feature of the relationship, including regular exchanges of artistic groups and sports teams between the two nations.
