Vietnam police seize smuggled smartphones, iPads worth $95,000

Nearly 400 hi-tech devices transported from the north failed to reach their recipients in Ho Chi Minh City after they were seized during delivery by economic police and market watchdog officers on Friday.

Officers inspected a pickup truck while it was delivering goods in front of a house in District 6, and the driver failed to show any papers or receipts for the 14 cardboard boxes he was carrying.

Police found 175 Galaxy S4, S5, HTC, Sony Z1, Vertu, and Zenphone 5 smartphones, as well as 190 iPads and accessories such as chargers and earphones in the vehicle, operated by Bo Cau JSC, a company based in Tan Binh District.

Each cardboard box was labeled with detailed information about the recipients, including their names, addresses, and phone numbers, according to police.

The hi-tech devices are estimated to be worth VND2 billion (US$94,135).

The driver said he was only hired to deliver the handsets, adding he had no idea where they came from.

A police officer said the goods were imported to Vietnam via the Mong Cai border gate in the northern province of Quang Ninh, and were transported by truck to Hanoi, where they were sent to Ho Chi Minh City by air.

The real owner of the goods remains unidentified, and the devices were confiscated for investigation, officers said.
