Police in the north-central province of Ha Tinh have summoned two local men who live-streamed themselves killing a monkey and eating the animal’s brain on social media on Sunday.
Officers in Hoa Hai Commune, Huong Khe District, confirmed on Monday evening they had convened a working session with Phan Hoi, 35, and Thai Van Sang, 41, who both reside in the commune.
Hoi and Sang were seen in a horrifying video depicting a group of people slaughtering a monkey, which appeared to weigh about 14 kilograms, and eating the animal’s brain.
The incident was live-streamed on Hoi’s personal Facebook account on Sunday and eventually stirred up outrage on the social media site.
According to Hoi’s statement, he discovered a bag along his way to Phuc Dong Commune, also in Huong Khe District, on the evening of November 16.
The man later found out there was a monkey in the bag and decided to take it back to his home.
Hoi then brought the monkey to Sang’s house the following day and slaughtered the primate.
They also invited Thai Dinh Quy, 61, Thai Quang, 58, and Dang Van Bien, 35, to have a taste of the animal during a drinking party.
Competent authorities will continue looking into the case and impose stern punishment upon those responsible after they have sufficient evidence, said Nguyen Quang Hao, head of the forest protection department in Huong Khe District.
Police are also working with the local forest protection agency to assess the credibility of Hoi’s statement regarding the origin of the monkey, Hao continued.
