A first-grade student is reunited with his mother after being found locked inside a classroom at an elementary school in Son La Province, northern Vietnam, February 10, 2026, in this still image taken from a video.
The incident occurred on Tuesday at the Lau Tong satellite campus of Nam Lau Elementary School in Nam Lau Commune.
The seven-year-old boy was inadvertently left alone in a dark, locked classroom after lessons ended at about 4:15 pm, according to a report from the commune’s People’s Committee.
The teacher, identified as L.T.S., 42, said she believed all students had left before locking the door and going home.
The student, who lives near the school and usually walks home on his own, was found around 7:00 pm after his family began searching for him at 5:00 pm when he did not return from school.
A staff member later unlocked the classroom and brought the child out, with initial checks showing his health and mental condition were stable.
Local authorities said the teacher acknowledged personal error and denied any conflict or improper motive.
School administrators said she had previously been regarded as a dedicated teacher.
The Nam Lau Elementary School has temporarily suspended her from duty pending further clarification of the incident.
The commune’s authorities said police were verifying the case in accordance with regulations and that officials had visited the family to offer support.
The incident drew widespread attention after the child’s parent live-streamed the search and subsequent discussions with authorities on social media, with the videos attracting millions of views.
