Minister Dien also urged the U.S. to take reciprocal measures to strengthen the growing economic relationship between the two countries.
Dien conveyed messages from Party General Secretary To Lam and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, reaffirming Vietnam’s commitment to further promoting the comprehensive strategic partnership with the U.S., established in September 2023.
He emphasized the desire to deepen economic cooperation for the benefit of both nations’ citizens and businesses.
Regarding the ongoing negotiations for a reciprocal trade agreement, Dien said Vietnam is approaching the talks with consistency and a commitment to sovereignty, political independence, and mutual benefit.
He stressed that Vietnam aims to align the agreement with international commitments and its level of economic development.
The minister called on Senator Marshall to use his political influence and expertise in trade, agriculture, and innovation to support Vietnam’s efforts.
He also encouraged greater collaboration between Vietnam and Kansas State in agriculture, aerospace, and biotechnology.
In response, Senator Marshall praised Vietnam’s seriousness and goodwill during the negotiations.
He pledged to raise the matter with President Donald Trump and relevant members of the U.S. administration.
The senator also welcomed the minister’s working visit, calling it a valuable opportunity to boost bilateral cooperation across a wide range of sectors.
Senator Marshall, a Republican representing Kansas, plays a significant role in shaping U.S. trade, economic, and agricultural policy.
The meeting took place against the backdrop of ongoing trade talks, prompted by the U.S. administration’s announcement on April 3 of a 46-percent reciprocal tariff on Vietnamese imports.
Though originally scheduled to take effect on April 9, the tariff was delayed for 90 days to allow time for the negotiations.
On June 4, Minister Dien and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer met in Paris and agreed to hold a third technical round of talks in mid-June, aimed at resolving key differences and advancing the agreement.
