Vietnam recognizes Type 59 tank as national treasure

Authorities in Kon Tum Province, located in Vietnam’s Central Highlands, held a ceremony on Thursday evening to make public the prime minister’s decision to recognize a tank used during the American war in Vietnam as a national treasure, according to the Vietnam News Agency.

Vietnamese soldiers used the Type 59 tank, numbered 377, to fight their way to the victory of Dak To-Tan Canh battle in Kon Tum’s Dak To District in 1972, contributing to changing the situation in the Central Highlands to their advantage over the then-Saigon regime.

To start the battle, the tank led the attack on enemy strongholds at the Dak To-Tan Canh region on April 24, 1972.

Despite intense enemy fire, the tank’s four-member crew bravely fought on until all ultimately sacrificed their lives and the tank was burnt with seven destroyed enemy tanks nearby.

The recognition of the No. 377 tank as a national treasure takes place in celebration of Vietnam’s reunification on April 30, 1975 and the Dak To-Tan Canh victory on April 24, 1972.
