Vietnam records positive assessments in US’s 2023 human trafficking report

Vietnam recognizes the U.S.’s positive judgments on the world’s trafficking human situation in the 2023 Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report issued by the U.S. Department of State, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ spokesperson Pham Thu Hang has said.

Hang made the recognition at a press briefing in Hanoi on Thursday in response to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper's request for her comment on the TIP Report, which was released last week.

In the report, the U.S. Department of State made positive assessments of the fight against human trafficking in a number of countries.

“Vietnam notes that the U.S. side has made such more positive judgments in the 2023 TIP report,” Hang said.

“In that spirit, we expect the two sides to continue to cooperate closely in the coming time so that the U.S. side can have a more objective, accurate, and comprehensive assessment of the situation and substantive efforts of Vietnam."

She said Vietnam is willing to discuss with the U.S. and other relevant parties cooperation in taking effective measures to fight human trafficking.

Hang affirmed that the Vietnamese government advocates promoting legal, safe, and orderly migration, and resolutely fights against illegal migration, smuggling of migrants, and human trafficking.

Over the past time, Hang said, Vietnam has continued to drastically implement a program on human trafficking prevention and fighting for the 2021-25 period, with orientations toward 2030.

This program has achieved many important results such as strengthening inter-sectoral coordination, improving statistical work, accelerating investigation and handling of human trafficking crimes, and strengthening communications to enhance public awareness of anti-human trafficking.

Vietnam is also implementing a plan issued by the prime minister in March 2020, focusing on strengthening a transparent migration environment, protecting the legitimate rights and interests of migrants, and preventing the risk of human trafficking in international migration, Hang told reporters.

This plan is among Vietnam’s efforts to reach the targets of the Global Agreement on Lawful, Safe, and Orderly Migration, which is the first inter-governmentally negotiated agreement, prepared under the auspices of the United Nations, covering all dimensions of international migration in a holistic and comprehensive manner, the spokeswoman said.
