Vietnam and Russia have reached consensus on boosting their bilateral relationship in national defense and security, within the framework of Russian Minister of Defense Sergey Shoygu’s visit to the Southeast Asian country.
Russia’s General of the Army and Defense Minister Shoygu joined talks with his Vietnamese counterpart General Ngo Xuan Lich in Hanoi on Tuesday, as part of the former’s official visit to Vietnam on January 22 and 23.
During their conversation, Lich stated that the trip was conducted in the context of dynamic and effective development of the two nations’ comprehensive strategic partnership and defense ties.
Minister Shoygu affirmed that Russia considers Vietnam a traditional friend and an important strategic partner in the region.

The two leaders expressed their pleasure at the strong development of bilateral defense cooperation over the past years.
Along with the thriving comprehensive strategic partnership, defense ties have been enhanced through all-level delegation exchanges, military technical and naval cooperation, United Nations peacekeeping activities, and experience exchange in military law, history, art, culture, and sports.
They shared viewpoints on defense- and security-related matters and agreed to boost coordination in traditional fields, including military technical ties, on a long-term and win-win basis for mutual benefits, peace, and stability in the region and the world.
Minister Shoygu also convened a meeting with State President Tran Dai Quang in Hanoi on the same day.
