The contract was signed between EVN and the DEC-ENTEC-TTP consortium, comprising China’s Dongfang Electric Corporation and Vietnamese firms ENTEC Energy Engineering JSC and Tam Thanh Phat Power Technology JSC.
The package, known as TB01-TAMR, covers the supply, factory testing, transport and on-site delivery of core equipment, including hydraulic turbines, generators, excitation and governor systems, auxiliary mechanical and electrical equipment, the main transformer, and 220-kilovolt grid-connection systems.
The Tri An expansion project, approved under Vietnam’s revised Power Development Plan VIII, has a total investment of VND3.97 trillion ($153.25 million) and is scheduled for full completion in the fourth quarter of 2027.
EVN plans to finance about 30 percent of the project with its own funds, with the remainder coming from commercial loans.
The expansion will add 200 megawatts (MW) of capacity through a new plant built alongside the existing Tri An facility on the Dong Nai River, the last hydropower station on the river before it flows into Ho Chi Minh City.
The current plant, the largest hydropower project in southern Vietnam, has four turbines and a capacity of 400 MW, generating about 1.7 billion kWh annually, according to EVN’s website.
The reservoir, covering approximately 323 square kilometers and storing some 2.7 billion cubic meters, supports industrial and domestic water supply for millions of people across eight southern provinces and cities, and irrigates more than 20,000 hectares of farmland.
EVN said the expansion would increase peak power availability for southern Vietnam, improve system flexibility and reliability, and help lower overall electricity production costs.
Construction of the expansion project began in 2025 and EVN is coordinating with local authorities in Dong Nai to ensure progress and quality targets are met.
