Astronomers said the cold moon will reach its fullness at 6:14 pm (local time) on Thursday, or 7:14 am on Friday in Vietnam, as it rises in the east within the Taurus constellation.
Although the moment of peak fullness lasts only briefly, observers agree that the most impressive viewing experience occurs at moonrise when it appears largest near the horizon.
Astronomers added that another unique feature of the December supermoon is its exceptionally high position in the night sky.
In Vietnam, the Hanoi Amateur Astronomers Society said the most ideal time to observe the cold moon is after sunset on Friday, looking toward the eastern sky.
This December cold moon is the third consecutive supermoon and the second-largest and brightest full moon of 2025, following the Beaver Moon in November.
A supermoon occurs when a full moon coincides with its closest approach to the earth, making its apparent size about 10 percent larger than a typical full moon.
In addition to the name ‘cold moon,’ Native American names for December's full moon include the ‘frost exploding trees moon,’ the ‘moon when the deer shed their antlers,’ and the ‘long night moon.’
The next full moon will be the wolf moon, expected on January 3, 2026.
It will also mark the final supermoon in a rare sequence of four consecutive supermoons spanning late 2025 and early 2026.
