Vietnam stages first naval parade featuring submarines, missile frigates

Vietnam held its first-ever naval parade on Tuesday to mark the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution (August 19) and National Day (September 2), showcasing the maritime strength of its armed forces.

The sea-based parade took place at the Cam Ranh military base in Khanh Hoa Province and was broadcast live to the main ceremony screen at Ba Dinh Square in Hanoi, where a military parade was ongoing to celebrate National Day.

Key highlights included the appearance of Kilo-class 636 submarines, guided missile frigates, anti-submarine vessels, fast-attack missile boats, and various ships operated by coast guard, fisheries surveillance, military medical corps, border guard, maritime militia, and helicopter forces.

Naval vessels were arranged in formations representing the letters 'A' and 'V,' as well as a diamond shape, during a flag salute and review.

According to the Vietnam People's Navy, the force has evolved from armed motorboats in its early days to a modern, multi-role fleet.

The current arsenal includes seaplanes, maritime patrol aircraft, anti-submarine helicopters, Kilo-class submarines, guided missile frigates, fast-attack missile boats, gunboats, torpedo boats, patrol vessels, mine sweepers, multi-purpose rescue ships, and transport ships.

Military officials said the growing capability of the naval force reflects Vietnam's readiness to effectively safeguard its maritime sovereignty and territorial integrity in this new era.

Two Project 159 anti-submarine frigates, equipped with AK-726 guns, torpedo launchers, and rocket launchers, take part in the naval parade. The ships are capable of speeds up to 24 knots and are designed for independent or coordinated anti-submarine operations.

A Project 1241.8 fast-attack missile boat, nicknamed the 'Lightning,' participates in the naval parade. The vessel can reach speeds up to 43 knots and is armed with modern missiles, automatic guns, anti-aircraft weapons, and advanced radar systems capable of tracking 15 targets and locking onto 3-5 simultaneously.

A Project 1241RE missile boat, with a top speed of 43 knots and a displacement of 502 tonnes, is equipped with powerful weapons including missiles, automatic guns, anti-aircraft artillery, and advanced long-range radar. Known for its high mobility and firepower, the vessel is used for patrol, reconnaissance, and maintaining high combat readiness in all situations.

A TT-400TP gunboat, capable of operating at sea for up to 30 days with a range of approximately 2,200 nautical miles, is equipped with modern weapon systems designed to engage enemy targets at sea, in the air, and onshore, as well as perform patrol missions.

Two Ka-28 anti-submarine helicopters equipped with twin gas-turbine engines, navigation and autopilot systems, and advanced anti-submarine warfare equipment are used to detect and engage enemy submarines and surface vessels in a wide range of weather and operational conditions, both day and night.

Two DHC-6 'Sea Guardian' maritime aircraft operated by the Vietnamese Naval Air Force, capable of short take-off and landing on water, are used for reconnaissance, maritime patrol, emergency medical evacuation, and search and rescue operations at sea.
