The nine-dash line is unilaterally drawn by China to unlawfully claim nearly all of the East Vietnam Sea.
According to a post on the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism's portal on Sunday, the Department of Cinema issued an official document on Saturday to the two companies, requesting compliance with Vietnamese law when distributing films online.
Under Vietnamese regulations, organizations distributing films online in Vietnam must either be officially recognized as qualified or obtain a license.
The Department of Cinema has not received any applications from Tencent Holdings Limited or any of its affiliates, including Image Future Investment (HK) Limited.
To ensure compliance with Vietnamese cinema law, the department requires Tencent Holdings Limited and Image Future Investment (HK) Limited to suspend all online film distribution activities in Vietnam until they are officially recognized as qualified, the department stated.
The department has also asked both companies to submit a report explaining and providing detailed information about their operations in Vietnam.
This includes their organizational structure, business model, legal relationship between Tencent Holdings Limited and Image Future Investment (HK) Limited, and a specific plan to obtain recognition for film distribution qualifications in Vietnam.
Both companies were required to submit written reports and confirmation of the suspension of film distribution to the Department of Cinema by 12:00 pm on Monday this week.
The department emphasized that both companies must comply with Vietnamese law to ensure a lawful and healthy environment for film distribution and broadcasting.

Previously, 'Love's Ambition' went viral online and was well-received by Vietnamese audiences thanks to the strong chemistry between the two main characters and its compelling storyline.
From the night of October 2 to the morning of October 3, multiple Facebook pages and entertainment forums announced they would stop updating content about 'Love's Ambition' after episode 16 was found to feature an image of the illegal nine-dash line, violating Vietnam’s territorial sovereignty.
Vietnamese platforms that had acquired the broadcasting rights, such as TV360, FPT Play, K+, and VieOn, promptly removed the film from their systems.
The Department of Cinema also wrote to Viettel Telecom, FPT Telecom, VieOn Corporation, Vietnam Satellite Digital Television, and Tencent Holdings Limited, requesting reports and explanations regarding the release and distribution of the film.
The Department of Cinema will impose strict penalties in accordance with the law and strengthen monitoring efforts to prevent similar violations in the future, the department stated.
