Vietnam triumphs at AIMO 2025 as all 22 contestants earn awards

Alongside the champion honor earned by Phan Thanh Huy, a grade-12 student from Hanoi–Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, the team also earned ten gold, seven silver, and four bronze medals, according to the Vietnam News Agency.

This year’s AIMO took place at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, gathering over 3,500 contestants from 21 Asian countries and territories.

Bui Van Phuong, head of Vietnam’s AIMO delegation, revealed that the 22 finalists had been selected from 2,500 candidates nationwide through a national contest organized in two months.

Despite being the smallest national team at the event, their performance went beyond expectation.

The AIMO competition, held annually since 2012 by the Asia International Mathematical Olympiad Union and conducted entirely in English, challenges students with a three-part exam of increasing difficulty.

Competitors must demonstrate not only mathematical knowledge but also logical reasoning and strong academic English skills to analyze, argue, and articulate solutions.

Vietnam first competed in AIMO in 2019 and has since accumulated over 200 medals—a testament to its focus on both analytical thinking and English proficiency among students.

The country will host the AIMO final in 2026.
