Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pham Thu Hang made the remarks at a press briefing in Hanoi, responding to questions about Vietnam’s position on the renewed clashes between its neighbors.
“Vietnam calls on both sides to refrain from using force, adhere to the ceasefire, continue dialogue, and resolve disputes peacefully in line with international law, the United Nations Charter, the ASEAN Charter, and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia,” Hang said.
She emphasized the importance of ASEAN solidarity and friendship in safeguarding regional peace, stability, and development.
Hang added that Vietnam will continue to actively support dialogue and the ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia, aiming to restore peace and cooperation along the border for the long-term benefit of both countries and the region.
Earlier, in July, the two countries agreed to a ceasefire following a five-day border conflict.
Tensions, however, escalated again recently after clashes on Monday killed four Cambodian civilians and one Thai soldier, according to statements from both sides.
The renewed fighting followed mutual accusations over provocations that took place the previous day.
Cambodia said its forces exercised restraint and did not retaliate despite what it described as provocative actions by Thailand on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Thailand alleged that Cambodia fired rockets at civilian areas and used grenades, artillery, and drones against Thai military positions.
Following its allegations, Thailand confirmed carrying out airstrikes on Cambodian military sites, describing them as acts of self-defense.
The violence has forced roughly 380,000 Thai residents to seek shelter, while 1,157 Cambodian families have been evacuated from Oddar Meanchey Province.
