The woman who squeezed the ‘private parts’ of her husband during a fight that eventually killed him in July has been detained on charges of murder, police in the southern province of Tien Giang said on Monday.
Phan Thi Kim Chuong, 55, will be held in custody for up to four months while officers investigate the fatal incident, according to the province’s police division in charge of social crime.
On July 10, Chuong and her estranged husband, 53-year-old Le Kim Khai got into a quarrel which quickly turned violent.
The husband was the first to use his fists, and repeatedly beat his wife despite their daughter’s desperate attempts to stop him.
After the daughter was eventually beaten, the wife screamed for help.
Before any neighbors could respond however, Chuong had grabbed her husband’s testicles, and pulled him down to the ground.
She then jumped on the man’s belly, her hands still gripping his private parts.
Chuong was still squeezing her husband’s balls when she finally managed to call the police.
After crushing them for about five minutes, Chuong agreed to stop, as advised by neighbors who had arrived at the scene.
At this point Khai had already lost consciousness and died as he was rushed to hospital.
An autopsy revealed that he died of tracheal effusion, with food stuck in his windpipe, leading to suffocation.
Chuong told police she had been repeatedly assaulted by her husband, whom she was separated from, and had only intended to ‘warn’ him when grabbing his testicles, she said.
The separated couple were co-parenting their two daughters prior to the incident.
Some people have said Chuong should not be charged with murdering her husband, as she only wanted to protect herself against his fists.
Domestic violence is not uncommon in rural areas of the Mekong Delta, and many sympathize with Chuong’s situation.
Others say if Chuong really wanted to protect herself, she would have let go of the man’s ‘private parts’ much sooner, instead of holding them for five minutes.
She also jumped onto the man and sat there for five minutes, apparently the main cause of his suffocation. The case continues.
