Vietnam wins 3 medals on opening day of Asian aquatics championships

Vietnam won two silver medals and one bronze on the opening day of the 2025 Asian Aquatics Championships in India on Sunday, including a historic result for Ho Chi Minh City’s swimming team.

Nguyen Kha Nhi claimed a silver medal in the women’s 1,500m freestyle with a time of 17:23.60, marking the first individual medal for a Ho Chi Minh City swimmer at the continental level since 1975.

Hong Kong’s Pac Tung Nikita Lam struck gold in 17:09.36.

Earlier, Vo Thi My Tien had taken silver in the women’s 200m freestyle final, clocking 2:01.95, just 0.65 seconds behind China’s Mingyu Luo.

Xintong Wang of Hong Kong placed third with a time of 2:02.30.

Both My Tien and Kha Nhi were making their debut at the Asian championships.

Pham Thanh Bao secured Vietnam’s first-ever men’s medal at the event with bronze in the 200m breaststroke, finishing in 2:12.50.

The 2025 Asian Aquatics Championships run from September 28 to October 10, with 1,100 athletes competing across 61 events.

China led the medal table after Day 1 with 11 golds, followed by Japan and South Korea.

Vietnam ranked sixth, while Thailand stood ninth with one bronze.
