The foreign ministry's spokesperson Pham Thu Hang provided the update at a press briefing in Hanoi, reporting on the protection of Vietnamese nationals amid escalating tensions between the two neighboring countries.

According to the latest reports from Vietnamese representatives in both countries, most Vietnamese nationals in the border region have been moved to secure locations away from conflict zones under the guidance of local authorities.

Earlier on Tuesday, Vietnamese diplomatic missions in Cambodia and Thailand advised citizens to avoid areas with complex security situations and to leave if necessary to ensure their safety and protect property.

Citizens were urged to comply with local regulations, stay in contact with Vietnamese missions, and follow official instructions.

The foreign ministry has been coordinating with relevant agencies to closely monitor the situation, maintain communication with local authorities, and prepare measures for citizen protection if needed.

The escalation follows a ceasefire agreement reached by Thailand and Cambodia in July after a five-day border conflict.

Clashes flared again on December 8 after a confrontation the previous day.

Cambodian authorities reported that the fighting has so far claimed 10 civilian lives and injured 60 others, while Thai military sources confirmed eight soldiers killed and 80 wounded, according to Reuters.

Hundreds of thousands of people have been evacuated from border areas on both sides.

At a previous press briefing, Hang expressed Vietnam’s deep concern over the recent developments and urged Cambodia and Thailand to exercise restraint, refrain from using force, and fully uphold the ceasefire.

She stressed that Vietnam will continue to actively support dialogue and efforts to maintain peace and stability along the border for the long-term benefit of both nations and the region.
