At a ceremony held the same day, Sun Group announced that its subsidiary, Sun Airport JSC, had formally taken over the management, operation, and exploitation of the airport in accordance with Vietnamese law.
The airport is located in Phu Quoc Special Zone, an island administered by An Giang Province in southern Vietnam.
Speaking at the event, Le Anh Tuan, Deputy Minister of Construction, said Vietnam's aviation sector has recorded strong growth in recent years.
In 2025, the country handled about 83.5 million air passengers and roughly 1.5 million metric tons of cargo, representing year-on-year growth rate of around 17 percent.
He said the rapid expansion has placed significant pressure on airports nationwide, highlighting the need to mobilize additional investment and management resources, including at Phu Quoc International Airport.
The deputy minister acknowledged the important role previously played by the state-run Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), which managed the airport during its earlier development stages.
ACV ensured aviation safety, security, and stable operations, while contributing to local economic growth and helping establish Phu Quoc as a recognized destination on the global tourism map.
In 2025, the airport handled approximately six million passengers.
Tuan also praised ACV for its professionalism and sense of responsibility in ensuring a smooth handover process while maintaining uninterrupted operations throughout the transition.

Phu Quoc, often referred to as Vietnam's 'pearl island,' has been identified as a strategic development zone linked to the country's vision of building a special administrative-economic area and an international-standard tourism, resort, and conference destination.
The island is scheduled to host APEC 2027, which is expected to significantly increase demand for modern infrastructure and high-quality services.
Following the transfer, the Ministry of Construction urged Sun Airport JSC to accelerate investment in infrastructure upgrades, technology, and service quality.
The ministry emphasized a modern, green, and smart development model that prioritizes passenger experience and reflects Vietnam's image as an integrated, dynamic, and developing economy.
Tuan stressed that Sun Airport JSC has received full airport infrastructure and facilities and must quickly complete its organizational structure, strengthen human resources, and invest in equipment to ensure smooth and uninterrupted operations.
Improving service quality and passenger experience will be critical to positioning Phu Quoc as a leading international aviation and tourism hub, he added.
