Vietnamese defense minister Phan Van Giang visits US

Vietnamese Minister of National Defense Phan Van Giang is paying a visit to the U.S. at the invitation of U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin from September 6 to 11.

During the visit, the two sides discuss global and regional issues of mutual interest, thereby enhancing the two countries' strategic trust, further promoting their defense cooperation in line with their comprehensive strategic partnership, and contributing to maintaining peace, stability, and development in the region and the world.

The visit by Minister Giang and a high-ranking delegation of the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense to the U.S. is in response to a trip to Vietnam by Austin in July 2021, according to Quan Doi Nhan Dan (People's Army) newspaper.

During Austin’s visit to the Southeast Asian country, he held talks with General Giang.

They praised the outcomes of defense cooperation between Vietnam and the U.S., particularly in addressing the aftermath of the war, tackling non-traditional security challenges, and supporting Vietnam's participation in United Nations peacekeeping missions.

They highlighted efforts to strengthen Vietnam's maritime law enforcement capabilities, military medicine, and training.

The two officials also witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the search, collection, and identification of Vietnamese martyrs’ remains.

They also exchanged several war memorabilia.
