The patient, identified as L.N.P., is 20 years old and pregnant with twins.

She suffered a serious workplace accident that crushed the lower third of her right forearm and completely severed her right hand.

She received initial treatment at a local facility in Thuan An Ward, Ho Chi Minh City before being urgently transferred to Binh Duong General Hospital for advanced care.

Upon arrival, doctors found her to be in stable condition and 23 weeks pregnant.

A traumatic amputation of the right hand was confirmed, and a multidisciplinary team was quickly formed.

Specialists from emergency care, obstetrics, surgery anesthesiology, hematology, and orthopedics consulted to develop a surgical plan.

Doctor Vo Thai Trung, deputy head of the department of trauma and orthopedics at Binh Duong General Hospital, said the team's top priority was the safety of the mother and her unborn twins.

However, the woman strongly wished to save her hand, prompting doctors to pursue an unconventional option.

"We made a bold decision to temporarily preserve the severed hand by attaching it to her leg, giving her a chance to later care for her two children with her own hands," Trung said.

"The entire medical team carried out the procedure in controlled conditions to ensure everything would proceed safely during and after surgery."

The operation lasted nine hours, beginning at 5:00 pm and ending at 3:00 am the next morning.

Both the mother and her unborn twins remain in stable condition.

The hand, now grafted to her leg, is showing signs of good viability.

Doctors plan to consider reattaching the hand to her arm once she has passed 32 weeks of pregnancy.
