The child was playing with live fish placed in a basin at home when one jumped into his mouth, causing him to severely cough and vomit blood, according to Dong Nai Children’s Hospital.

He was taken to a local hospital, where doctors extracted fragments of the fish before transferring him to the provincial children’s hospital.

Doctors there performed a 40-minute endoscopic surgery under general anaesthesia to remove the seven-centimeter fish, which was still alive and had sharp fins.

The boy has since returned to stable condition.

Nguyen Trong Nghia, deputy director of the hospital, advised parents not to let children play with live fish, warning of risks including airway obstruction and internal injury.
