Doctors at the Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital in the namesake city removed objects, including styrofoam pieces and a toy robot arm, from the vagina of a five-year-old girl in Vinh Phuc Province, northern Vietnam.
The girl’s mother said she and her husband work far from home and their daughter lives with her grandparents.
During the Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday last month, they returned home and found that their daughter’s vagina was smelly and inflamed.
Being afraid that the girl might suffer a rare disease, the couple took her to the Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital for a check-up.
At the hospital, doctors detected many objects in her vagina after conducting an ultrasound scan.
The girl was hospitalized immediately so that doctors could remove the objects from her vagina.
According to doctors, this was a complicated case as many objects lay deep in the vagina and rectum.
With a tiny endoscope, Dr. Le Thi Anh Dao conducted an endoscopy without hurting the girl’s maidenhead.
“We picked an object measuring 20x7 millimeters and many black styrofoam pieces. We later detected another black object," Dao recounted.
“As the object could not be taken out through the vagina, we pulled it through the rectum.
"The object was a toy robot arm measuring 20x10 millimeters."
Dao said the case was complex as in earlier ones, only one object was found in children’s vaginas, but this girl crammed many objects into hers.
In addition, doctors had to choose appropriate endoscopes to clearly see the objects and not to injure the girl.
During the check-up and treatment process, the patient and her parents were cooperative so that doctors could give treatment.
The girl’s health has been stable and she has been discharged from hospital.
Dr. Dao said that the hospital admits two to three similar cases per year.
Parents should pay more attention to their children and prevent them from playing with small objects which can be crammed into their noses, ears, and vaginas.
“Cramming objects into children’s vaginas is not rare. They want to learn about the surrounding world and their body," the doctor said.
“Therefore, parents should keep a close watch on their children, bathe them daily, and teach them not to put objects into their vaginas.
“If abnormal signals, such as an unpleasant smell or bleeding in their daughters’ vaginas, are observed, they should take their children to hospital for prompt treatment."
