Vietnamese food hawker fined $85 after reusing customer’s leftover

Authorities in Nha Trang City, located in Khanh Hoa Province, south-central Vietnam, said on Tuesday that they had imposed a VND2 million (US$85) fine on a street hawker, who had been filmed pouring leftover broth into a stock pot supposedly for reselling.

Huynh Thi Ty, a 80-year-old local, who makes a living by selling a soup dish on a sidewalk near Khanh Hoa General Hospital in Nha Trang, received the administrative penalty for violating the regulations on street food businesses.

During a working session with functional forces, Ty refuted the claim in a video shared on social media on December 21, in which she apparently poured broth from a bowl that had been served to a customer into a stock pot with the intention of making more servings from the leftovers.

The woman explained that was the last serving of the day, and she poured the leftover into the pot in order to close her stall and planned to discharge it at her residence.

However, Ty admitted to pouring leftover drinking water into a bottle for reusing as shown in the video.

The authorities also imposed another VND2.5 million ($106) fine on Ty for illegally using sidewalks to provide food and beverage services, obstructing traffic.
