The conference was held in Seville, Spain from October 14 to 16.
The research, titled ‘Reverse engineering a multi-stage implant targeting Vietnamese organizations,’ was presented by Luong Minh Anh, head of the malware reverse engineering team at VNPT Cyber Immunity (VCI).
According to the research team, the implant framework is particularly dangerous because of its complex, multi-stage architecture.
Unlike conventional malware, it is designed with nine distinct layers to maintain stealthy operations, continuously erase traces of its activities and evade traditional security defenses.
Through reverse engineering, the Vietnamese researchers systematically decode the implant, uncovering its underlying structure, stealth techniques and operational mechanisms.
Beyond the reverse engineering, the team successfully developed supporting tools and technical detection rules to help identify similar threats at an early stage.
The findings provide a practical foundation for government agencies and businesses to detect and respond more effectively to advanced persistent threat campaigns.
Showcasing Vietnam’s cybersecurity capabilities on global stage
The Virus Bulletin Conference is one of the world's leading international forums for research into malware and cyber threats.
The selection of a study examining a cyberattack campaign targeting Vietnam for presentation at the event has helped bring the country's cybersecurity challenges and research capabilities into the global technical discussion.
Vietnamese researchers had previously presented hands-on research into cyber espionage at international events, including AVAR 2025 in Malaysia.
They have also made their mark in prominent cybersecurity competitions, such as Flare-On and the International Cybersecurity Championship 2025.
Participation in international conferences demonstrates the team's technical expertise, but practical application remains the ultimate goal, according to a VCI representative.
Insights gained from reverse engineering are being integrated directly into monitoring and defense systems.
The initiative aims to build a ‘digital immune system’ capable of strengthening cybersecurity and protecting the digital assets of organizations and institutions across Vietnam.
