Three sixth graders have been hailed for bravely rescuing a 83-year-old woman who fell into a ditch filled with cold water in Quang Ninh Province, northern Vietnam, their school principal said on Tuesday evening.

The incident occurred at around 5:30 pm on December 29 when Luu Duc Duy, Pham Hong Anh, and La Minh Anh – all six graders at Binh Khe Middle School in Dong Trieu Town – were cycling home from school.

After the trio discovered an old woman, who was later identified as 83-year-old Tran Thi Ken, struggling to get out of a water-filled ditch on the side of the road, they dropped their school bags, coats, and bicycles and rushed to help her get out.

After bringing Ken to safety, one of the three children rode his bicycle to a nearby main road and found adults to help bring her home.

Ken later explained that she had fallen into the ditch because her old age and the cold weather had caused her to become unsteady on her bicycle.

“It’s fortunate that the three children came to my rescue,” Ken said.

Among the three sixth graders, Pham Hong Anh had been praised at Binh Khe Middle School in the past for proactively returning a lost item to its owner, according to the school principal.
