Vietnamese students win five medals at IOAA

Vietnam’s representatives won five medals at the 2021 International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA), the 14th iteration of the international competition for high schoolers covering the two fields, held in Colombia last month.

The five medalists are the seniors specializing in physics at Amsterdam High School for the Gifted in Hanoi, according to the Hanoi Department of Education and Training.

They include Nguyen Khanh Tam and Tran Dinh Dung with two gold medals, Nguyen Manh Duc with a silver, and Le Duc Anh and Dinh Tran Hai Chien with two bronzes.

This is the first time that all Vietnamese students have won a medal in an IOAA edition.

This year’s competition was organized virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the participation of 50 countries and territories in 60 teams, setting another record for the number of participants.

The next event will be the IOAA 15 hosted by Ukraine in August 2022.

The main goal of the IOAA is to kindle interest in astronomy for youngsters and enhance the development of international contacts among different countries in promoting astronomy and astrophysics in high schools, according to its website.
