A high school homeroom teacher in Nghe An Province, north-central Vietnam has been suspended from work after her female student allegedly died by suicide at home due to school violence.
Nguyen Huy Bang, president of Vinh University, said on Wednesday that the teacher, identified as Dang Viet Ha, was suspended starting from April 18 until further notice.
Ha was earlier assigned to serve as the homeroom teacher of class 10A15 at the High School for the Gifted under Vinh University, located in the province’s Vinh City.
“Ha is working with the local police. The school appointed another homeroom teacher as a substitute for Ha to take charge of her class,” Bang said.
The high school was told to team up with police officers to clarify whether there is a group of people formed to isolate N.T.Y.Ng., who was studying in class 10A15 and allegedly died by suicide at home last Saturday.
Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, Ha said Ng. was close to a group of friends before starting high school, but their friendship ended a while later.
Ng. and her family previously sought the school’s nod to allow her to be transferred to another class, as the schoolgirl was reportedly isolated at school and was beaten by a group of students on her way home.
However, her class transfer request had yet to be resolved.
Last weekend, Vinh University was informed of the schoolgirl’s suicide allegedly linked to school violence.
The university’s management board right after that worked with the high school and relevant parties over the issue, which was then reported to the Ministry of Education and the provincial authorities.
The school representatives also visited and offered condolences to the bereaved family.
