Thanh, 27, lifted 120kg in his third snatch attempt, edging out China's Wang Weidong and securing Vietnam's first gold medal of the tournament.
In the clean and jerk, Thanh lifted 140kg, finishing behind Wang, who managed 146kg, and the Philippines' Agad Fernando with 141kg.
Thanh's total of 260kg earned him a silver overall and a bronze in the clean and jerk.

Vietnam also picked up three bronze medals in the women's 45kg category, with Pham Dinh Thi lifting 68kg in the snatch, 85kg in the clean and jerk, and a total of 153kg.
China's Zhao Jin Hong took gold with 190kg, while Taiwan's Hong Zi Yu claimed silver with 161kg.
The championships run from May 9 to 16 and feature top lifters from across Asia.
