Despite growing interest, foldable smartphones are still estimated to account for only a single-digit share of Vietnam's smartphone market, according to industry observers.
Samsung remains the dominant player in foldables through its Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip series, supported by an extensive retail network and years of marketing investment.
OPPO's Find N line-up, alongside offerings from Huawei and Honor, has also expanded consumer choice, but the category remains relatively small.
High retail prices, typically ranging from VND35 million (US$1,350) to VND50 million ($1,930), and concerns over durability and display creases have limited broader consumer adoption.
Analysts say Apple's entry into the category could represent a turning point for the segment rather than simply the launch of another premium smartphone.
Apple has historically influenced consumer purchasing behavior in markets where its brand enjoys strong loyalty, including Vietnam.
Vietnam is among Apple's strongest markets in Southeast Asia, with a large base of iPhone users.
Analysts believe a foldable iPhone priced in the VND50-60 million ($1,930-2,310) range could appeal to existing Pro and Pro Max users seeking a more differentiated upgrade, even if it remains a niche product in terms of overall sales.
Could the iPhone 18 be Apple's first foldable?
According to multiple global technology publications and prominent Apple analysts, the company is expected to adopt a staggered launch strategy for its iPhone 18 line-up, with the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max and its first foldable model expected to debut in September 2026, followed by the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e in early 2027. Apple has not confirmed any of the reports.
Supply chain sources and analysts say Apple has spent years refining foldable technology instead of rushing into the market, focusing on durability and reducing the display crease that has long been one of the category's biggest drawbacks.
The device is widely expected to feature a book-style design with a titanium hinge and an inner display engineered to minimize the crease, putting it in direct competition with Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold series and other premium foldables.
