Vietnam’s Ca Mau hands over 1.5 tonnes of war-era bombs

Military sappers in Ca Mau Province, southern Vietnam on Wednesday safely transferred eight bombs weighing nearly 1.5 metric tons to Brigade 25 and the Chemical Battalion, both under the Vietnam People’s Army, for disposal, authorities confirmed.

The bombs, ranging from 40 kilograms to 334 kilograms in weight, included both penetration and chemical types.

Each had diameters between 229 centimeters and 406 centimeters, with a potential blast radius of 500 meters to one kilometer.

Local residents discovered the ordnance while clearing land for farming and building houses in several areas of Ca Mau.

Lieutenant Colonel Lam Van Dung, head of the Engineering Division of Ca Mau’s Military Command, said the unit regularly collects unexploded wartime explosives and conducts public awareness campaigns.

He urged residents to immediately report any findings to specialized forces rather than attempting to move or dismantle unexploded ordnance for scrap metal or explosives.

“Even after decades underground, these bombs remain highly dangerous and can cause accidents if disturbed improperly,” Dung warned.
