The move was discussed at a conference held by the local department of culture, sports and tourism on Wednesday to review its performance in the first eight months of 2026 and outline priorities for the rest of the year.
Tran Van Huyen, deputy secretary of the Can Tho Party Committee, called on the department to work with relevant agencies to quickly resume electric sightseeing services during low-traffic periods.
The vehicles, which have become a familiar sight in Can Tho, are popular among tourists exploring the city center.
Huyen also called for a review of parking areas and additional traffic signs so 45-seat tourist buses can enter central areas to pick up and drop off tour groups.
The measures are part of broader efforts to improve tourism transport and connectivity in the Mekong Delta city.
Huyen said Can Tho’s tourism sector remained fragmented, with limited products and poor transport links to orchard attractions and destinations in remote areas.
The city has also yet to develop large-scale community-based cultural tourism villages, he added.
To address some of these shortcomings, the tourism department has proposed attracting investment in a multi-purpose tourist wharf and upgrading facilities around Ninh Kieu Wharf, a key departure point for visitors heading to the city’s floating market.
City leaders gave in-principle approval to most of the proposals.
Can Tho is also preparing several major cultural and tourism events for the final months of 2026, including Vietnam Culture Day and the Ooc Om Boc Festival in November, as well as the Can Tho River Culture Festival scheduled from December 30, 2026 to January 4, 2027.
Electric tourist vehicles in Can Tho have been suspended since July 1, 2025, after Government Decree 165/2024 restricted four-wheel motorized vehicles to roads with a maximum speed limit of 30 kph.
Because no roads in the city met that condition, local operators had to halt their services.
The companies later asked authorities to allow the vehicles to return on selected routes in Ninh Kieu and Cai Khe, particularly in the evening, saying the service had become a popular way for tourists to explore downtown Can Tho and connect with riverfront and nighttime attractions.
