Vietnam’s Lai Ly Huynh competes at the Wuyang Cup Chinese chess tournament in Guangzhou, China, February 2026, in this handout image.
The match was played at Guangzhou Cultural Park in front of thousands of spectators.
Huynh beat Guo, who is ranked 12th in China, in the fourth round of Group B to maintain his unbeaten record in the tournament.
The Wuyang Cup is regarded as one of the most prestigious events in Chinese chess, traditionally featuring leading players and major champions.
Organizers this year granted Huynh a direct place in the final stage as an overseas player, following his world championship title in September 2025.
The decision drew debate after four of China’s top six players, including Meng Chen, Cao Yanlei, He Wenzhe, and Huang Guangying, were eliminated.
Placed in a strong Group B, Huynh avoided Meng Fanrui and Yin Sheng but was drawn alongside Liu Zijian, ranked seventh in China, Liu Baihong, ranked ninth, and Guo.
The group stage is being played in a double round-robin format.
After four matches, Huynh has one win and one draw against Guo, a win over Liu Zijian, and a draw with Liu Baihong.
He leads Group B with eight points and a tiebreak score of seven.
Liu Baihong also has eight points but a lower tiebreak score of 5.5.
Two rounds remain in the group stage, with only the top finisher in each group advancing to the semifinals.
