Vietnam’s Da Nang weighs penalties for cigarette littering on beach

My Khe is one of Da Nang’s best-known beaches and a major tourist draw in the city. 

The long sandy beach was once named by Forbes among the six most attractive beaches on the planet.

The issue came under renewed attention after Tuoi Tre (Youth) online newspaper reported that some beachgoers were smoking, flicking ash, and stubbing cigarette butts directly into the sand at beaches across Da Nang.

The report prompted calls from readers for stricter enforcement, while residents also raised the problem through the city’s public feedback portal.

They said cigarette filters littering My Khe Beach were harming the cleanliness and image of one of Da Nang’s most popular tourist attractions.

Residents have urged authorities to increase inspections, strengthen public awareness campaigns, and consider measures such as designated smoking areas or restrictions on smoking in public beach areas.

The Da Nang Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism has asked the Management Board of Son Tra Peninsula and Da Nang Tourist Beaches to address the issue.

The board said it would step up patrols and remind residents and visitors to comply with environmental protection rules, avoid smoking where prohibited, and dispose of cigarette butts properly.

It is also considering installing more warning signs and information panels, adding suitable waste collection facilities and broadcasting reminders through beach loudspeaker systems.

Authorities will also review existing regulations and coordinate with relevant agencies on possible designated smoking areas or further restrictions on smoking in public spaces.

Any new measures will have to comply with current regulations and reflect conditions at Da Nang’s tourist beaches, the board said.
